kim yun-hwan has created a collection of hand-carved furniture pieces composed of varying numbers of organic wooden shapes. the unintended series started with one single shape that would make a small-size tray and an object, after which the seoul-based designer decided to connect more of them together into one giant, curvy piece in the shape of a cabinet door.

‘my work started out from change of unintended shapes,’ notes kim yun-hwan, ‘I wanted to express the moment of change when it occurred.’ the unintended series is entirely handmade, taking up to 12 hours a day to complete each piece and almost a month to finish the entire collection. to create the objects, yun-hwan drew a sketch of the design plan on a 1:1 section paper and arranged the woods using a hand grinder, a hand miller, and a curving knife, after which he buffed the material using sand paper and finished the piece with an oil layer.
