architect and designer, volodymyr dereznichenko, has created a piece of furniture simply entitled ‘a capsule’ in an effort to provide users with a moment of solitude. inspired by the circular windows of the famous nakagin capsule tower in tokyo, the project utilizes the same round form to envision a very personal space, facilitating quiet contemplation, in response to our current age of information-overload.

dereznichenko’s ‘capsule‘ is designed as a physical way to isolate users from surrounding noise, resulting in a small space to relax and re-group. the round form means the seat is comfortable for any height and perfect for short naps or listening to music. a fan-shaped curtain moves around in a circle, allowing users to control the amount of privacy. the project is also well-equipped with electronics so you can charge your devices. a sliding table and small shelf are also included in the design and are specifically designed for the size of a laptop and smartphone respectively.

having its roots in the original design of nakagin capsule tower, the round sofa shares the same diameter of the window of 1.3 meters. volodymyr dereznichenko has also completed a renovation project of one of the capsules in the tower, implementing the personal space beside an existing circular window. in essence, the project aims to provide a haven of solitude in a world where it is often difficult to get ‘off-grid.’ the capsule intends to be a transportable environment that could be implemented in lobbies, common rooms or lounge spaces.
